Summer of the Geek

July 3, 2009

summer-of-the-geek

The sun is high in the sky, the temperature is on the rise, and the geeks flee to the shelter of nice cool basements across the land. Ah, summer! Such a great season for nerdy activities.

The Dueling Grounds is back in business, and from what I saw last night on their opening day, business is going to boom. They’ve left Roncesvalles for Bloor and Dufferin and have landed in a much, much larger space. The basement gaming area is absolutely huge, easily the most expansive in the city, and every table was occupied by Warmachine / Hordes and Magic players. I’d say it’s a good start. Not so good for my wallet, as I noticed the unopened boxes of Games Workshop product stacked to the rafters…

Since my schedule allows for it, I’ll be positively gorging myself on ‘jack and ‘beast action throughout July. Maybe even playing some 40K as time allows!

Blood Bowl for the PC was a worthwhile purchase. The single player is pretty good, but for my money, playing in a private league against real, live people (Goons) presents a true challenge. What other game can you lose on points, but win in shear carnage inflicted upon the other team so it still feels like you won?

Next week sees the wife working every night due to the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the ROM. So, as long as I don’t get distracted by siren call of video games, I’ll be able to put a sizable dent into my painting backlog. Yeah, those AoBR marines took 4 months to paint… what’s your point!?

This weekend, our D&D troupe (now with 2 new members!) begins work on their Eberron characters. Hopefully there won’t be too many distractions and delays. I’m just happy to be back in the business of writing plots again.
