My First Tournament
January 20, 2009
This past Saturday I headed on down to the Dueling Grounds for my first official Warmachine tournament. The format was Steamroller v4 at 500 points; a nice, relatively soft introduction to the world of competitive play. I had but 2 goals: have fun and try to win at least one or two games. Turns out I accomplished both!
In this format you could bring 2 army lists. I tried to adapt mine to match the greatest number of Steamroller scenarios, keeping in mind the types of opposing armies I may face.
Haley’s “Take and Hold” List
Faction: Cygnar
Points: 499
Model Count: 16
Victory Points: 18
Captain Victoria Haley
> Squire
> Thorn
Gun Mage Captain Adept
Journeyman Warcaster
> Hunter
Ogrun Bokur
Rupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord
Trenchers [6]
> Trencher Officer & Sharpshooter
Caine’s “Withering Fire” List
Faction: Cygnar
Points: 498
Model Count: 18
Victory Points: 18
Lieutenant Allister Caine
> Squire
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist
Journeyman Warcaster
> Defender
Rupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord
Stormsmith
Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team
Stormblades
> Stormblade Officer & Standard Bearer
There were roughly a dozen players at the event (pretty good considering that the west end of the city had been blacked out the day before and it was bone-chillingly cold out). If memory serves, the factions represented were:
- 3 Khador
- 1 Legion
- 3 Mercenaries
- 1 Cryx
- 1 Cygnar (me)
- 1 Menoth
- 1 Circle
Overall, for the next 7 hours, each player got in 4 games.
Next up: the play-by-play.
