Math is Hard!
December 5, 2008
Why the hell, hours after playing a match and drifting off to sleep , would I suddenly remember that I should have paid more attention to the math? Why couldn’t I have remembered the accumulating damage of the Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team’s Chain Fire ability when they were pouring fire into the towering form of Lich Lord Terminus? He was down to 4 health. Forgotten bonus damage: 6. Dammit.
Last night’s trip (probably my last until 2009) to the Dueling Grounds was a bit anti-climactic for the end of the Call to Arms league. No other league members showed, so I got to take on Cryx and Legion, again. The spice of variety is severely lacking. Word has it that 401 Games will be starting a league in January, so hopefully this brings some new opponents, army types and challenges.
The Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team
Good god these guys are pricey at 77 points (especially in a 500 point game), but boy do they ever pay off. They’re a virtual toolbox of infantry killing goodness.
- Using Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em combined with Haley’s Blitz, devastated the entire front rank of the leading Mechanithrall unit, completely blocking most of the central part of the Cryx army’s line of sight, preventing ranged retaliation or charges for the next turn.
- Long Shot picked off stray targets at astonishing range.
- 4 Deadeye‘d Blaze shots nearly returned Terminus to his grave (very high damage rolls - forgetting Chain Fire = lose, however).
Squire
Cygnar players have been drooling for the Warcaster attachment and he’s finally here. Not only is he a fun sculpt that kind of looks like a Zentraedi Battle Pod, he truly is the new auto-include. He’ll never be the star of the game, but his ability to give Haley 8 focus for three turns, extend her control range to 16″ and allow her a spellcasting re-roll once a turn is more than worth his 18 points.
Looks like I’ll have plenty of time to get some painting done over the next month or so. Once I finish my trenchers, their UA, WA and Finn (ugh, assembly line work), I think I’ll paint up the Squire. I got my basing kits in as well, so my newer models will be just that tiny bit prettier.
