Storm Before the Calm
November 23, 2008
Kinda sucks how life, specifically the “work” bits, interferes with the fun parts. I’ve got a bit of a winning streak going with my Haley armies, but it looks like due to scheduling issues, I may not be able to capitalize on my success for at least a month. I’ll miss the start of the next Dueling Grounds Warmachine /Hordes league, but perhaps this time, even with the late start, I may be a contender. Anything’s better than 2nd last place. My most recent games were both non-league and 500 points. Each I won via ‘caster kill. My lists aren’t specifically assassination oriented, but that’s how things turned out.
Haley vs. Deneghra
Yet again the twins faced off in a particularly brutal contest. Tons of attrition on both sides and a nailbiter of a finish.
- Deneghra got off an early Dark Seduction on her feat turn and took over my 9 trooper strong Trencher unit. However, due to the fact their abilities were severely degraded, they managed to put very little damage on Haley.
- Scrambled the Nightmare on the first turn, running him into a wall and largely neutering it for the duration of the match.
- Strangewayes yet again doing better with his Voltaic Gauntlet rather than as an effective ‘jack marshall.
- Haley got taken down to ONE health, camped focus, and charged her sister, somehow dodging free strikes from Darragh Wrathe and a bone chicken to bury her spear in her evil twin’s chest.
Haley vs. Rhyas
Tried out my anti-Hordes variation of the above list. My opponent had an all warbeast force, and at first I wished I had brought Alten to the party. Turns out, that Pendrake and his Bokur bodyguard were once again the MVPs.
- My Precursor Knights unit nearly took out a Carnivean by charging on their mini-feat. Unfortunately for them, their 2nd attacks didn’t go off because it had Spiny Growth on it, killing each knight in turn.
- The Long Gunners took out an Angelius on the 2nd turn under Haley’s feat. Not much can survive three CRAs.
- Pendrake only served to keep giving the Bokur Dismember. In one turn, the Ogrun was able to charge a Raek for 15 + 5d6, gaining three attacks with Flying Steel. The Raek went down in two hits (one doing 43 damage), and with his final swing impaled a nearby Shredder.
- Eventually, Rhyas was left with no beasts. She survived an additonal turn by going invisible, but with no fury available to her, fell to Haley’s hand cannon.
Whenever I get back to the game, I’m going to work the Black 13th into my lists to try them out. For their points, they may well replace the Long Gunners. I’m still painting the trenchers and Captain Finn (brown, brown and more brown) with the help of my new compact magnifying lamp. Makes painting much easier, but it also highlights the flaws in my technique.
