Good Idea / Bad Idea: Prequel Edition
November 17, 2008
Prequel’s are funny things; they can either be highly effective or utter catastrophes with regards to their established mythos. In wildly different world, genres or even media, the following are perfect examples of this dichotomy:
Good Idea
J.J. Abrams’ upcoming pseudo-reboot of the ageing and decrepit Start Trek franchise. The trailer hit the ‘net and was met with the expected snarling and gnashing of teeth by the truly “devoted”. While I actively despise most time-travel stories and would have preferred that the entirety of Trek be paved and started from scratch, I’m cautiously optimistic for next year’s film. It seems modernized, competent and exciting. Plus Simon Pegg plays Scotty, and the Peggster makes everything better. Yes, even Run Fatboy, Run.
Bad Idea
The Watchmen video game tie-in prequel. Everyone involved in this useless endeavour should feel ashamed of themselves. Not necessarily because it flies in the face of what The Watchmen was as a comic (there were what, like all of 5 action scenes in the whole thing?), or that it pisses in Alan Moore’s cereal, but because it makes absolutely no sense. It’s a god damned brawler based on a book that emphasized the consequences and probable insanity of people who would dress up in fetish gear or owl costumes and beat the shit out of people night after night.
Dr. Manhattan came to see that it didn’t fucking matter in the grand scheme of things. Hopefully the buying public turns their back on this piece of shovelware for the same reason.
