Today is my 9th wedding anniversary. I can hardly believe it’s been that long, or the fact that I am lucky enough to be married to such a wonderful, smart, funny and talented woman such as Melissa. I could drone on and on about the challenges we’ve overcome as a team, our beautiful children, her inspiration that propelled me into new opportunities and her broadening of my epicurean horizons (well, at least in the direction of the horizon).
However, because this blog is about geeky stuff, here’s a list of nerd landmarks which punctuate our 13-year relationship:
- Mel has been with me throughout the three generations of Playstation consoles, even when two of the iterations were purchased while I was suffering from crippling stomach illnesses.
- Dutifully attended movie screenings almost every night for a month during the inaugural Toronto FantAsia film festival in 1998 (has it really been a decade?). I’ll never live it down that I “made” her sit through Ashes of Time, but at least it’s given her comeback ammo for years.
- Attended FanExpo with me in 2004 while heavily pregnant with Abigail, on our 5th anniversary no less.
- Has come to enjoy boardgames, particularly Carcassone (both board and Xbox Live varieties) and is so good at them to give me excellent competition.
- Has a better memory for ongoing plot points and character developments on shows like BSG and Dr. Who than I ever will.
- Played VLARP with me for a significant period of time. Luckily, we can look back on those days and laugh.
There’s probably much more that I’ve forgotten, but her overall pro-geek attitude stands as inspiration for all of those other couples who don’t share, or tolerate, nerdy interests. I beg all of you young lovers or newlyweds: please allow your geek to do their thing, Your relationship will be the better for it.
(Unless they are a furry, write self-insertion slash fanfic, adore yaoi/hentai or cosplay. That shit’s right out and severing is your only option.)
