Reasons for “Living”: Nerdly Round-Up
May 22, 2008
Yes, I am a tad late with this one. “Vacation” turned into “work” for the most part, so surprisingly little gaming or posting occurred. Anyway, on with this week’s RfL round-up:
- US network The CW renewed Reaper for the fall and I’m quite happy that it survived it’s first season and the writer’s strike. Yeah, it’s kind of cheesy, but they’ve used the “monster of the week” narrative structure to great effect in the latter half of the run. Often, the hunt for the escaped soul takes up very little screen time in preference to the meta-plot. If you haven’t yet checked out the show, you’ve got all summer to catch up.
- Russell T. Davies will be turning show running duties on Doctor Who over to Steven Moffat for the 2010 season. Thank Christ. I can appreciate some of what Davies did to resurrect Who and launch it’s spin-offs, but there’s a point at which humour tips over into camp, and for my tastes, Davies allowed his scripted episodes to sashay way over the line far too often.
- I haven’t finished GTA IV yet, but while taking a break from it, I had a revelation: this is probably only the first of this generation’s GTAs. Even if it’s only in the form of DLC, this makes me very happy.
- Oh, Jack Thompson! Not only are you so bad at your chosen profession that you have to have your lawyerin’ done by other. more competent, people, but you’ve been found guilty of many, many cases of professional misconduct. Look, this goes beyond the whole anti-games, “murder simulators” bullshit you’ve been spouting for what seems like an eternity: it proves that you’ve left your professionalism behind in preference to your useless and patently ill-informed crusade. Jack, go back to law school for a refresher (paying particular attention to Ethics101 this time), and settle into a life of quiet, but lucrative, obscurity. I know you won’t, but one does hope that after you’re dis-BARed, we won’t have to see you in the press anymore.
- The Cars debut album will be released for Rockband next week. Finally, an DLC I can get behind!
- Marcus Fenix now graces my desk, standing proudly next to my Red Son Superman. I can’t say Fenix did much for me as a character, but I really did like the look of the COG armor and equipment.
- Can’t wait for Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse in January, 2009? By the end of the summer, we may see his Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog online. Doogie Howser vs. Captain Tight-pants: a match made in heaven.
