Dear Ma. Mom. Jessica.
Ma.
I don’t know if you’ve crossed the border between the US and Canada very often, but you can tell when you do. You can just…feel a difference. Maybe its subtle things, like fewer flags on lawns (and the fact that the flag is very different). I’m not sure what the specifics are…but you can feel it. Or at least, I can. Or rather could.
Heading back towards Toronto, I passed over Hamilton, and so I decided to stop and go to their Elysium. Maybe I was putting off going back to Toronto, trying to keep from hitting those demons as long as possible, but that’s what I did. I stopped and did a bit of socializing. I don’t regret it one bit.
Now, I remember from when I lived in Toronto, Hamilton is unique. Its a steel town. So, when you drive past it on the highway at night, it looks like a city on fire. Which, naturally begs the question: Why would a vampire want to live there? Or perhaps: what kind of vampire would want to live there?
I wrote a poem, inspired by some things I saw. Its short, but its relevant all the same:
I agree with what you’re saying,
Or rather I agree with where you’re going,
But I can’t agree with how you’re getting there.
Might I suggest…a thesaurus?
Don’t get me wrong, the evening wasn’t a complete bust. The Prince of Toronto was there, so I was able to pre-introduce myself (and make sure that I’d be welcome and not have any trouble being able to stay there). So, the he seemed decent, and I think we’ll get along alright. I don’t think we’ll be BFFs or anything, but I think we can work together. He was talking about starting each elysium with a poetry reading, so at the very least he appreciates what I do.
I also met a member of the “family”. Name of Phineas something-or-other. Apparently he’s in Toronto now. Did you know that? I wasn’t actually expecting to run into any direct family, so that was a bit of a surprise. He’s not exactly…good with people, from what I could see, but apparently he’s taking some “manners courses” (I don’t really think they are taking, but at least he’s trying, right?).
I also met a few members of the Circle and they seemed decent. Jade, and a few others (I’m not so great with names at the moment…too many people…not enough brain space or something). Members of other covenants didn’t do a great job of convincing me that they weren’t all assholes, but that wasn’t unexpected. Jade is a Tarot Card, and I said I wanted to be one too, but I’ll probably have to get deeper into the Circle if I want to do that. I’m not sure I want to commit to that all that deeply yet. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I dig what they’re saying and I chose the Crone because…they are less assholes than the other covenants I’ve encountered, but I’m not sure I buy into it completely yet. Jade’s pretty certain she can convince me though, so at least she’s got a “project” right? I’m sure that’s good for her and will help to make her feel useful and stuff.
Other people I met: Brooke (she’s important, I hear). Oh, and I didn’t meet this Lucas guy, but he gave me the “double guns” and I returned them. I don’t know if that means the same thing for him as it does for me, but if it does, I guess we’re cool or something.
Something odd happened, though. Apparently this prince (they call him Magistrate) got deposed. He’d appointed some Regents a while ago. And in return they “removed him as Magistrate”. Conveniently they did it when he wasn’t there. I asked them if I could be a dick for a second and they told me I could, so I asked them about that and alluded to their cowardace, but for some reason they didn’t take notice of the dig. Maybe I was too subtle about it? (Subtlety did seem to be beyond some of them). Anyway, this prince-guy’s name is Rugen or something, and he’s going to come back to find out that the folks he appointed as Regents have thanked him by putting a metaphorical knife in his back.
For me: a lesson learned for the future. Don’t give power to people you don’t or can’t control.
Now, these Regents seem to be set up so that there’s one Regent from Each clan. So they make up a “council” of some kind, who are supposed to advice the prince. GOOD JOB, I say (my voice dripping with sarcasm, and not said so that anyone there could hear it). THEN! Some Bishop (Gideon? Gabriel? GABRIEL!) throws some kind of tantrum, because there’s also a council of covenants who weren’t consulted. So then he threw down his bottle, and rolled on the floor pounding with his feet and hands and then he took his ball and went home (ok, not so much, but picture it if you can… he was wearing a cassock and everything!).
So, then that was the night. I left and resumed my trip to Toronto.
That’s it for now.
I’ll let you know how the “Homecoming” goes.
